The Original Invitation to Join the Oklahoma State Association of
Architects (OKSAA)
Adapted from original charter documents dated December 20, 1924.
President: Leonard H. Bailey, AIA (OKC)
Secretary-Treasurer: A. Thompson Thorne (Tulsa)
Memo – December 20, 1924\
Fellow Architects:
Your attention is called to the fact that the Oklahoma State Association of Architects was organized at the meeting held in Oklahoma City on December 6th (1924), to which all architects in the state were invited and at which meeting there were thirty-four architects present from various parts of the state.
The following report of the Organization Committee was adopted: “Your committee recommends the organization of a state association of architects divided into three or more Chapters located at Tulsa, Oklahoma, Muskogee or elsewhere. A chapter must consist of at least six members. Each chapter shall select from its membership one director of the Board of Directors of the State Association. Each director shall be entitled to one vote for every six members enrolled in his Chapter. Meetings of the Board of Directors shall be held semi-annually. The officers shall consist of President, Vice-president, Secretary and Treasurer who shall be elected by the Board of Directors for a term of one year, said officers to become members of the Board of Directors of the State Association and shall not be elected from the Directors. Each Chapter shall pay annual dues of Five Dollars ($5.00) to the State Association for every enrolled member. The Board of Directors shall hold an annual meeting on the second Friday in January at which time they shall elect officers for the ensuing year. The annual meeting of the Association shall be held the day following the election of officers. The Directors upon their election shall prepare and submit a suitable constitution and by-laws for the consideration of the first annual meeting for 1925.”
The meeting was very enthusiastic and the spirit of co-operation remarkable. The annual dues of twenty-four members were handed to the Secretary-Treasurer before the meeting adjourned. The officers whose names appear on this letterhead were appointed to serve only until the second Friday in January 1925, when they will be succeeded by the officers and directors elected as provided above.
One of the main objects for the formation of the Association at this time
is to secure the active co-operation of all architects in the state in the
effort now being given to have a law governing the practice of architecture
enacted by the State Legislature in the early part of the next session. A
copy of this proposed law as approved by the Association will be sent to you
shortly.
In is needless for me to point out the benefits to be derived from a state
Association such as this. Membership in the Association is open to all
practicing architects in this state and each member will have an opportunity
to share in the work done by the organization by association with the
Chapter nearest to his place of business.
The time is short and the work is important so this opportunity is being
extended to you as a practicing architect to become a member at this time by
sending in Five Dollars ($5.00) for annual dues. (If you have already joined
the O.S.A.A. your receipt is enclosed herewith.)
Arrangements for assignments to Chapters will be made as soon as we have had
time to receive replies to these invitations. A list of architects is
enclosed. If you know of any others, please advise the Secretary.
The Legislative Committee is preparing a working plan for betting in touch with the various Senators and Representatives and you will probably hear form them very soon. When you have digested the proposed law a few words with you Senator or Representative would probably secure their active support for the Bill when it is presented. A list of Senators and Representatives is also being sent to you.
COOPERATION spells SUCCESS!
Yours truly,
(signed by) A.T. Thorn
Secretary-Treasurer
